DISSERTATION
I got the idea for my dissertation while travelling in America during my Part 1 year out. I visited the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in Manhattan and was struck by the differences in the form of New York tenements in comparison with those in Glasgow. I found a tenement in Glasgow that was built around the same time as 99 Orchard Street, Queens Park Terrace, and researched their history to find out the influences that led to their distinct appearances.

URBAN HOUSING
With the opening of the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, several local hospitals have been closed, leaving large parts of the city in need of development. The Urban Housing project was a group project where we looked at how to use the site of the Yorkhill Hospital and bring people back to that part of the city.

URBAN BUILDING
The Urban Building project explored how an intervention relates to the urban context around it. I proposed to build an Atheneum to Urban Farming on the island site between Church Street and Byres Road in Glasgow, adjacent to the Western Infirmary development, that would educate people on the benefits of locally produced food. This would also benefit the local economy as Byres Road has numerous shops and restaurants that specialise in locally grown produce.
