METROPOLITAN FIGURES

Introductory project to the design thesis, exploring the theme of Metropolitan Figures, objects within the city that give identity and life to the area. This could be a public square, a public building or an interior public space.

DESIGN THESIS

      The Metropolitan Figures project formed the basis of my thesis, exploring how the people of Madrid use public space as an extension of their homes due to the hot climate. I wanted to explore the idea of the architectural promenade to tell the story of Madrid through an open air museum that would create new connections through the city while also providing shade from the midday sun. The upper level re-establishes the western edge of the Medieval city, allowing people to engage with an area that isn’t currently accessible.

IN-DEPTH STUDY

      As part of the architectural technology aspect of the design I wanted to explore how vegetation could be used as shading for the promenade and to provide interest throughout the year. The in depth study explored the different planting options that could be used on the site.

BUILDING ENERGY MODELLING

Post Graduate Elective exploring the influence different aspects of the building envelope have on annual energy consumption using TAS building energy modelling software.
